Renewable energy is one of the most important sources of energy worldwide. Biogas is produced under anaerobic conditions from organic waste and is used as a fuel for electricity generation at the Mashhad Recycling Industrial Complex. In this study, hydrogen sulfide was removed from biogas using water-scrubbing techniques based on gravity and stepped configurations. The results showed hydrogen sulfide removal values ranging from 34% to 87%, with removal efficiencies of 34% to 97%. The hydrogen sulfide loading rate ranged from 8.1 to 40.8 g/m³·h, while the elimination capacity ranged from 7.3 to 20.9 g/m³·h. The study presents a novel approach to the design and construction of water-scrubbing systems. Compared with similar systems, the proposed design incorporates a vertical stepped arrangement and a vacuum pump to separate residual gases. A key advantage is the use of gravity to facilitate water flow, reducing the need for additional water pumps and consequently lowering energy consumption.
